It is usually hard to visualize a love story into interesting cinema work, especially when it deals with the continuation. Instead of giving superb performance and entertaining movie, the work is playing a sort of trap to the audience – hiding behind the success story of the previous work. Only a little which manages to maintain such quality, and Ada Apa Dengan Cinta 2, latest work of Riri Riza, a celebrated Indonesian movie director, is among those successful work. The continuation of movie of the same title has proven to be successful in giving entertaining performance to its audience who have been waiting for nearly 14 years to discover the end of love story between Rangga and Cinta.
Separated for 9 years and lives in different countries, Rangga (Nicholas Saputra) and Cinta (Dian Sastrowardoyo) have ‘unfinished’ love story. Deep in their heart, they have questions to answer about their relationship though Rangga hesitates to bring about the answer and Cinta accepts Trian’s proposal.
While waiting for her marriage, Cinta plans to go to Yogyakarta with her old friends. Together with Maura (Titi Kamal), Milly ( Sissy Priscillia) and Karmen (Adinia Wirasti), Cinta seeks tranquility and happiness for the last time. During the vacation, Milly and Karmen see Rangga at a distance in the same city. Karmen then arranges a meeting between Rangga and Cinta without telling her friend first. It is quite difficult for Cinta at first to accept what Karmen did. However, she understands that she needs to seek answer to what Rangga did in the past. The meeting between Rangga and Cinta has proven to be fruitful to the continuation of their romantic relationship eventually.
Ada Apa Dengan Cinta 2 illustrates friendship in the right manner in big city. Cinta, Maura, Karmen and Milly take care each other and promote mature and positive view towards life. It might be simple, but such story is rarely exposed and transformed into movie by Indonesian cinema workers. The movie, at some points, gives us a break to take a deep breath – that there’s still hope for Indonesian movie of outstanding quality. Having taken place in New York, Yogyakarta and Jakarta, Ada Apa Dengan Cinta 2 (#AADC2) emphasizes the beauty of Yogyakarta – in terms of cultural point of view – instead of focusing more on the city of New York. You can’t see such apt on other Indonesian movies which tend to make use easier way to get visa abroad recently in some countries. In addition to its covering the beauty of Indonesian culture and tradition, #AADC2 reminds the audience by the fact that Indonesia has Melayu culture also. Poem, for example, can still be seen in this movie. Superb drama and characterization, coupled with light jokes and romance, will engage and evoke audience emotionally – making it a must-see Indonesian movie of the year.
