10 Cloverfield Lane

Howard showing a barrel containing perchlorate to Emmet and Michelle

Alien invasion is always interesting to visualize into big-screen movie. However, when it is done, the movie will be sort of predictable one: Superb visual effects, super strong alien and then the alien is defeated using simple technology man ever made. Such movie may poor in story, but rich in effects; something that drives people or audience to forget one important factor of a good movie work. 10 Cloverfield Lane directed by Dan Trachtenberg provides alternate focus of an alien invasion, which might be suitable to be put into consideration of your movie list.

Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is driving her car to start a new life when she has an accident leaving her unconscious. To her surprise, she finds herself badly injured and lie on a simple bed in a bunker own by Howard (John Goodman). The former NAVY had Emmet (John Gallagher, Jr.) built the bunker in case of emergency such as nuclear war or something similar. The trio stays in the underground building without having adequate knowledge or information about what truly happens above. The feeling of being trapped – or even kidnapped – forces Michelle to flee, only to discover that something more terrible is waiting for her outside. She needs to find another way out. And, thanks to Emmet who gives his life to Howard, she manages to escape from Howard who turns out to be a kind of pervert old man after the death of Emmet.

10 Cloverfield Lane portrays a life in a bunker. Away from prediction, the movie is far from being a boring one due to the interesting flows and dialogues, and above average characterization of the actors. Though the presence of Emmet is questionable for having minor role, audience will be enthrilled by Michelle’s survival skill – including her capability of making her own gas mask within a very short period of time. In addition to Emmet’s role, the alien itself seems to be complementary only – if we can’t say it disappointing in appearance. The alien and the ship, both are easily defeated by simple weapon a kid can make. You can’t expect more action or even violence in this drama. Still, you can put it in your collection.
